Does Stories Of Danger Deter You From Travelling Abroad?

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Does what you hear through the news and the media deter you from travelling abroad? Does stories you hear from you friends and family alter your trail of thought about travelling overseas? There are many opportunities to volunteer abroad and although it is very important to listen to the media and the news and also what your families and friends tell you to do, you have to understand that companies would not send volunteers to destinations that were deemed unsafe.

We have seen clashes in three North African countries this year and possibly more to come. Many companies have had to cancel trips to these areas, but so far it seems that Sub Saharan Africa has been totally unaffected by this revolt. Many of these African countries are among some of the safest in the world. Whether you want to volunteer in Kenya or volunteer in Ghana, the opportunities for you to travel abroad and avoid conflict and disruption is readily available to you. The media and news have a habit of making a huge deal out of something that is perhaps only temporarily out of hand which causes many people to develop a false impression of countries or perhaps even of a continent.

When people work abroad they do so because they want to make a change and also to experience a different life to the one in which they are living at home. This is a perfect opportunity to do something like that and the last thing volunteers need before they travel is people telling them ‘it’s not safe’ and ‘you’re likely to get into trouble’ when the people saying this have no experience of travel to these regions. For whatever reason is seems many people are to easily brainwashed and believe everything they see.

Lessons You Will Learn When Volunteering Abroad

It doesn’t matter how well travelled somebody might be as every time you travel abroad there is always something to learn. For most of us when we are at home we get set in our ways and get used to how things should be. When you travel overseas everything seems to change. Languages are totally different, the culture is very different and in many countries the food is entirely different as well. If you do some volunteering in Africa then you will experience first-hand all of these dramatic changes.

Learn More About Yourself

When you travel abroad you get a new cultural experience and an opportunity to see how that country operates. If you are participating in any volunteer work you will be involved in cultural and traditional practices every day and really become part of the local environment. You will actually change a lot as a person, and these changes may actually be undetected by you until you return home. After your travels you are more likely to be an all rounded caring person. You become much more well equipped in making the most of what is available to you and also learn how to get along with just the essentials. You will also be a much better problem solver. It’s amazing how much you can learn just being abroad for a short period of time.

Learn A New Language

Travelling to a country that speaks a different language is by far the quickest way to learn a new language. If you decide you want to be a volunteer in Uganda then you will be able to learn the dialect of Swahili. Just having the language spoken around you day in day out is enough to be able to learn it. It is important to learn these languages as not only does it make your time abroad easier being able to understand what it is people are taking about but they will be a lot more respectful to you knowing that you are trying to learn the language.
